It’s kinda annoying having to constant look switch from the top of the screen.

There’s no favorites tools toolbar in GoodNotes which was so helpful in Notability especially having to switch back and forward from pen, highlighting, erasing, and lasso tool. Here is what I have gathered within the past couple of hours of using GoodNotes over Notability: I previously used Notability on my MacBook with a Wacom drawing tablet but I wanted to test the waters out with GoodNotes5.

(engineering student here) I just received my M1 iPad Pro 12.9 and pencil today and was thinking the same thing. :) I think I'll use goodnotes to study for exams, create a little notebook for each subject with a thought out visual summary of the material. And it's very nice to set up that pretty book at home, but in class who has the time? You just need your stuff in order and ready to go! With goodnotes you're setting up a book, with notability you're grabbing a piece of paper. It also so visually appealing for that type of use! and is the perfect application for things like digital bullet journaling with stickers and all that. On the other hand it's way more suitable for the things that you want space for, like journals, planners, lists etc. Imo it's just less suitable for the fast/live environment of a lecture. Even the way it navigates/animates is more still, while notability animations are usually fluid and fast. Goodnotes is a lot more static and solid imo, the zoom field functions differently, the navigation is different, things take up more space and time. They're automatically titled with the date, I just add the topic of the lecture to the title afterwards. I love my system now, I have one note per lecture in Notability and each one includes an audio recording of said lecture. I have an 11 inch M1 and I don't even WANT a larger screen because the zoom field gives me everything I need haha. It's very fluid and adjustable, and for me personally has made all the difference for truly going paperless.

But for continuously writing along during class or a meeting etc, nothing beats the zoom function notability has. I prefer notability for things that are more static, like journals and drawings/diagrams etc.
